Premium navigation for all without compromise: introducing the new TomTom Via

Premium navigation for all without compromise: introducing the new TomTom Via

~ TomTom premium satnav solution for mid-range market with hands-free calling on select models ~

Berlin - The launch of the new TomTom Via device today makes TomTom the first satnav provider to bring a hands-free solution with Voice Control to mid-range devices. Packed with innovative features and designed for convenience, the TomTom Via makes premium navigation accessible to all.

'The TomTom Via brings high-end navigation to the mid-market – without compromising quality and convenience,' says Damian Woodward, VP sales and marketing at TomTom. 'From the exciting new Voice Control and hands-free calling, to the market-leading IQ Routes™, it's everything drivers need for a truly effortless driving experience.'

TomTom Via drivers also get the added benefit of TomTom Speed Cameras. This points out fixed speed camera locations on the road ahead, helping drivers to stay safe and relaxed.

A first for the mid-range market, Voice Control lets drivers operate their device simply by talking. They can input addresses and navigate with ease – all without taking their hands off the wheel or their eyes off the road. On Via 120 and 125 models, TomTom also brings hands-free calling (via Bluetooth®) to the mid-market audience, allowing drivers to use their device as a car-kit for their mobile phone.

The TomTom Via also provides a reliable Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) at any time of the day based on intelligent IQ Routes speed profiles collected from millions of users. Now drivers can relax and go with the flow, knowing exactly when they're due to arrive.

The TomTom Via also has the added convenience of a brand new foldaway mount which is integrated with the device, so it's always there when drivers need it. This clever mount easily attaches to the windscreen and, using the optional mounting disk, drivers can turn the device 180 degrees – a sensor flips the screen the right way up, enabling them to position it wherever suits them best.

And that's not all: with the TomTom Via, drivers can see more and drive easy thanks to a new user interface, plus a choice of a 11cm (4.3') or 13cm (5') touch screen for the easiest operation. And every device comes with new, richer maps covering an additional two million kilometres of roads in greater graphical detail, putting more information at drivers' fingertips. All this is wrapped up in a stylish, brushed aluminum design, with the diamond-cut screen bezel edge.

For premium navigation for the mid-market without compromising convenience, it has to be the TomTom Via.

Availability and pricing The TomTom Via will be available in the Autumn and also comes in a version with LIVE Services (see separate release on the TomTom Via LIVE).

Notes for editors Key features of the TomTom Via:

Sierra Wireless first to support Telstra’s dual-channel HSPA+ network with new USB modem and expanded wireless module lineup

Telstra Ultimate™ USB Modem by Sierra Wireless now available in Australia; new Sierra Wireless AirPrime™ HSPA+ embedded wireless modules introduced to support device manufacturers

Vancouver, Canada - Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR; TSX: SW) today announced that it is supporting the launch of Telstra's first-in-the-world dual-channel HSPA+ network in Australia with some of the fastest modems the company has ever produced. The Sierra Wireless AirCard® 312U wireless USB modem, first demonstrated at Mobile World Congress in February, is now commercially available in Australia, marketed as the Telstra Ultimate™ USB modem. With it, Australians working at client locations, at airports, or on their commute home can access the Internet and online applications at speeds typically reserved for office environments.

Dual-channel HSPA+ doubles the speeds of current HSPA+ networks from a peak downlink of 21 megabits per second (Mbps) to 42 Mbps, at the same time improving network efficiency and providing a better experience for customers with more consistent network performance. Customers using a Telstra Ultimate USB modem in enabled coverage areas will experience real-world download speeds up to 20 Mbps.

'The new speeds have the potential to increase how and where our small and large business customers work – boosting productivity in the process,' said Mike Wright, Executive Director, Telstra Networks & Access Technologies. 'Our customers have told us that they want higher speed mobile broadband so they can work more flexibly outside of the office and we are delighted to offer them these new speeds.'

In addition to announcing the commercial launch of the AirCard 312U, Sierra Wireless has introduced the AirPrime MC8801, as well as the AirPrime MC8704 and MC8705 intelligent embedded modules for HSPA+ networks, to support manufacturers incorporating wireless connectivity into a variety of devices, including notebook, netbook, and tablet computers; connected consumer electronics products like personal navigation devices; and home or enterprise-class routers.

'Once again, Telstra is leading the world in rolling out the latest HSPA+ technology, and we're thrilled to be the first to provide customers in Australia with products that enable them to take full advantage of the network's capabilities,' said Jin Pak, Vice President of Sales, Asia Pacific, for Sierra Wireless. 'Being first with wireless USB modems benefits our embedded customers as well. Manufacturers looking to provide the capabilities of the new AirCard 312U inside their devices can be confident that Sierra Wireless embedded modules deliver a tested, reliable solution for the best possible performance.'

The Sierra Wireless AirPrime MC8801 intelligent embedded module is designed to support HSPA+ Dual Channel networks and peak network downlink speeds of 42 Mbps. To provide a more cost-effective alternative for manufacturers that don't require the top speed, the new AirPrime MC8704 and MC8705 offer HSPA+ single channel support, with peak network downlink speed of 21 Mbps. The AirPrime MC8704 offers voice calling capability, while the MC8705 is targeted for data-centric devices that do not require voice support.

Samples of the AirPrime MC8801 and MC8705 are now available to customers for testing, with commercial shipments expected in the fourth quarter of this year. Samples of the AirPrime MC8704 are expected to be available early in 2011. With a substantial track record of working with network operators and manufacturing customers to integrate new wireless technologies quickly and reliably, Sierra Wireless offers the experience and expertise to simplify wireless integration and optimize time-to-market.

Intel to Acquire Infineon’s Wireless Solutions Business

Joint news release by Intel and Infineon Technologies

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

* Intel to purchase Infineon's Wireless Solutions Business, called WLS, in a cash transaction valued at approximately US Dollar 1.4 billion. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2011.
* WLS sale is a strategic decision for Infineon to expand leading position in markets for automotive, industry and security technologies.
* WLS will operate as a standalone business. Intel is committed to serving WLS' existing customers, including support for ARM-based platforms.
* The acquisition expands Intel's current WiFi and 4G WiMAX offerings to include Infineon's 3G capabilities and supports Intel's plans to accelerate LTE. The acquired technology will be used in Intel® Core™ processor-based laptops, and myriad of Intel® Atom™ processor-based devices, including smartphones, netbooks, tablets and embedded computers.
* The deal aligns with Internet connectivity pillar of Intel's computing strategy.

Neubiberg, Germany and Santa Clara, Calif. - Infineon Technologies AG and Intel Corporation have entered into a definitive agreement to transfer Infineon's Wireless Solutions (WLS) business to Intel in a cash transaction valued at approximately US Dollar 1.4 billion.

WLS, a leading provider of cellular platforms to top tier global phone makers, will operate as a standalone business serving its existing customers. WLS will also contribute to Intel's strategy to make connected computing ubiquitous from smartphones to laptops to embedded computing.

'The global demand for wireless solutions continues to grow at an extraordinary rate,' said Paul Otellini, Intel president and CEO. 'The acquisition of Infineon's WLS business strengthens the second pillar of our computing strategy - Internet connectivity - and enables us to offer a portfolio of products that covers the full range of wireless options from WiFi and 3G to WiMAX and LTE. As more devices compute and connect to the Internet, we are committed to making certain that Intel is well positioned to take advantage of the growth potential in every computing segment, from laptops to handhelds.'

'The sale of WLS is a strategic decision to enhance Infineon's value. We can now fully concentrate our resources towards strong growth in our core segments Automotive (ATV), Industrial & Multimarket (IMM) and Chip Card & Security (CCS). This creates a great perspective for all Infineon customers, employees and shareholders,' said Peter Bauer, CEO of Infineon Technologies AG. 'We all stand to benefit enormously from this deal. Thanks to the outstanding effort of the employees and the management during the last years, WLS is excellently positioned to grow further with the new owner who is ideally suited for this business.'

The WLS transaction is a strategic decision for Intel and Infineon. WLS complements Intel's existing assets and enables growth in mobile computing, smartphones and embedded computing. Infineon will benefit from this by stronger addressing three central challenges to modern society – energy efficiency, mobility and security.

Intel's goal is to expand its mobile and embedded product offerings to support additional customers and market segments, including smartphones, tablets, netbooks, notebooks and embedded computing devices. Through this effort, Intel will pair WLS' best-in-class cellular technology with its core strengths to enable the delivery of low-power, Intel-based platforms that combine its applications processor with an expanded portfolio of wireless options – bringing together Intel's leadership in WiFi and WiMAX with WLS' leadership in 2G and 3G, and a combined path to accelerate 4G LTE.

Intel expects WLS to continue growing, and remaining a standalone business to ensure continuity of existing customer sales, projects and support. The business will continue to support its customers with the best solutions possible, including ARM-based products as well as Intel-based application processor platforms with leading-edge 3G slim modem solutions.

WLS today holds leading positions in the field of wireless mobility and cellular platforms for smart phones and ultra-low-cost, entry phones. WLS provides baseband processors, radio-frequency transceivers, power management integrated circuits (ICs), additional connectivity features, single-chip solutions as well as the corresponding system software. This helps to enable the smooth transmission of voice and high-speed data from the backbone of the telecommunication network to the end user's device. With annual revenue of Euro 917 million, WLS was approximately 30 percent of Infineon's total annual revenue of Euro 3.03 billion in the past financial year.

The board of directors of Intel and the supervisory board and the management board of Infineon have approved the transaction. It is expected to close in the first quarter of 2011, subject to certain regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions specified in the definitive agreement.

Intel and Nokia Create First Joint Laboratory

University Research Center Will Lead to New User Interfaces and Experiences

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

* Intel Corporation, Nokia and the University of Oulu have announced the establishment of their first joint research center.
* One of the first objectives of the new lab is to create new and compelling mobile user experiences that leverage the rapidly increasing capabilities of mobile devices.
* The lab is the latest member of Intel Labs Europe – Intel's European Research Network.

OULU, Finland, - Intel Corporation, Nokia and the University of Oulu officially opened the Intel and Nokia Joint Innovation Center today. It will employ about two dozen R&D professionals and become the latest member of Intel's European Research Network, Intel Labs Europe.

Initially the lab will conduct research for new and compelling mobile user experiences that could leverage the rapidly increasing capabilities of mobile devices. Creating interfaces that are more similar to interactions in the real world can enable experiences that are more natural and intuitive, in the same way that modern games and movies are more immersive through the use of realistic 3-D graphics.

The new lab is well aligned with the MeeGo open source platform recently launched by Intel and Nokia. MeeGo provides the greatest flexibility for developing new 3-D experiences on mobile devices as much of the lab's research activity will also be open source.

'The University of Oulu's focus on future telecommunications solutions as well as electronics and photonics made it the perfect location for the Intel and Nokia Joint Innovation Center,' says Justin Rattner, Intel chief technology officer and director of Intel Labs.

Another potential area of research could look into technologies that allow displaying a 3-D hologram of the person you are talking to on the phone, a capability only found in science fiction movies today. Consumers will feel more involved and engaged with their mobile experience than with current methods.

'3-D technology could change the way we use our mobile devices and make our experiences with them much more immersive,' said Rich Green, Senior vice president and chief technical officer, Nokia. 'Our new joint laboratory with Intel draws on the Oulu research community's 3-D interface expertise, and over time will lay down some important foundations for future mobile experiences.'

The lab will be located at the Center for Internet Excellence at the University of Oulu, and will work closely with the Oulu Urban Living Labs, which provide a unique environment for sensor research, testing and piloting technological and social innovations. The Intel and Nokia Joint Innovation Center follows a successful industry and academia collaboration model similar to the ones of Intel Labs Barcelona and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Spain, the Intel Visual Computing Institute and the Saarland University in Germany or Intel Labs Berkeley at the University of California at Berkeley in the United States.
