Deutsche Telekom showcases 4G mobile communications at IFA

* Showcase unveils the performance and advantages of 4G technology for tomorrow's gigabit society
* A new dimension of the mobile Internet and efficient broadband coverage of "gaps" on the map
* Website launched for reservations for "Call & Surf Comfort via radio"

Deutsche Telekom is showing its latest mobile communications technology in action at IFA 2010: Visitors to the stand can try out the 4G technology for themselves in a showcase and discover its advantages. Among the novelties Deutsche Telekom's guests are able to experience are mobile video conferences in HD quality and extremely fast downloads and uploads of high-resolution movies and photos. Visitors can select and operate the 4G applications they wish to test at a huge multi-touch desk. Deutsche Telekom will also demonstrate the mobile communications technology for connected life in the gigabit society live via video link between the IFA stand and a moving car in Bonn. Deutsche Telekom's technology partners Huawei and Samsung are providing support in the execution of the showcase. Huawei is involved in setting up the network infrastructure, while Samsung supplies the USB sticks.

At the IFA, Germany's leading telecommunications provider is also unveiling its new product - "Call & Surf Comfort via radio" - which will provide broadband coverage in areas that currently have no broadband access. A newly developed router will be used for stationary applications of this kind.

Starting immediately, Deutsche Telekom will give customers and potential customers the opportunity to put their name down online for the new technology and the corresponding "Call & Surf Comfort via radio" offer. After registering at www.telekom.de/4g, they will receive information about the technology, its possibilities, and further plans. Over the coming weeks, additional information will be continuously provided on this website, which therefore serves as a comprehensive information portal for all things related to 4G.

By rolling out 4G technology, Deutsche Telekom is taking a quantum leap in broadband coverage, closing gaps in service in rural areas and facilitating mobile data transfer at speeds that are on a par with DSL in the fixed network. In the 4G field, Deutsche Telekom is systematically acting as an innovation driver, putting its first 4G base station into operation in Kyritz (Brandenburg) at the end of August 2010.

4G is essentially innovative LTE technology (LTE, Long Term Evolution). At a frequency auction held by the Federal Network Agency in May 2010, Deutsche Telekom purchased frequency blocks from the so-called digital dividend in the 800 MHz, 1.8 GHz, and 2.6 GHz bands, thereby laying the foundations for the LTE rollout. LTE based on 800 MHz will allow efficient broadband coverage to be provided in rural areas with relatively few mobile communications base stations. What is more, in higher-frequency ranges, LTE optimally complements UMTS/HSPA, the third-generation (3G) mobile communications standard, and will further significantly increase the maximum bandwidths possible throughout the network.

All in all, by the end of 2010, Deutsche Telekom plans to bring fast Internet access to over 1,000 locations (the "gaps" on the map) that currently have no broadband access. Of those, some 500 locations will receive 4G service, while the others will receive different mobile or fixed-network technologies such as UMTS or DSL. In the fixed-network area, service is being provided predominantly via close cooperation with the relevant municipalities. In the coming years, Deutsche Telekom intends to systematically continue network expansion to bring service to areas with inadequate network coverage. In 2011, the company plans to use 4G to eliminate an additional 1,000 "gaps".

Sierra Wireless first to support Telstra’s dual-channel HSPA+ network with new USB modem and expanded wireless module lineup

Telstra Ultimate™ USB Modem by Sierra Wireless now available in Australia; new Sierra Wireless AirPrime™ HSPA+ embedded wireless modules introduced to support device manufacturers

Vancouver, Canada - Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR; TSX: SW) today announced that it is supporting the launch of Telstra's first-in-the-world dual-channel HSPA+ network in Australia with some of the fastest modems the company has ever produced. The Sierra Wireless AirCard® 312U wireless USB modem, first demonstrated at Mobile World Congress in February, is now commercially available in Australia, marketed as the Telstra Ultimate™ USB modem. With it, Australians working at client locations, at airports, or on their commute home can access the Internet and online applications at speeds typically reserved for office environments.

Dual-channel HSPA+ doubles the speeds of current HSPA+ networks from a peak downlink of 21 megabits per second (Mbps) to 42 Mbps, at the same time improving network efficiency and providing a better experience for customers with more consistent network performance. Customers using a Telstra Ultimate USB modem in enabled coverage areas will experience real-world download speeds up to 20 Mbps.

'The new speeds have the potential to increase how and where our small and large business customers work – boosting productivity in the process,' said Mike Wright, Executive Director, Telstra Networks & Access Technologies. 'Our customers have told us that they want higher speed mobile broadband so they can work more flexibly outside of the office and we are delighted to offer them these new speeds.'

In addition to announcing the commercial launch of the AirCard 312U, Sierra Wireless has introduced the AirPrime MC8801, as well as the AirPrime MC8704 and MC8705 intelligent embedded modules for HSPA+ networks, to support manufacturers incorporating wireless connectivity into a variety of devices, including notebook, netbook, and tablet computers; connected consumer electronics products like personal navigation devices; and home or enterprise-class routers.

'Once again, Telstra is leading the world in rolling out the latest HSPA+ technology, and we're thrilled to be the first to provide customers in Australia with products that enable them to take full advantage of the network's capabilities,' said Jin Pak, Vice President of Sales, Asia Pacific, for Sierra Wireless. 'Being first with wireless USB modems benefits our embedded customers as well. Manufacturers looking to provide the capabilities of the new AirCard 312U inside their devices can be confident that Sierra Wireless embedded modules deliver a tested, reliable solution for the best possible performance.'

The Sierra Wireless AirPrime MC8801 intelligent embedded module is designed to support HSPA+ Dual Channel networks and peak network downlink speeds of 42 Mbps. To provide a more cost-effective alternative for manufacturers that don't require the top speed, the new AirPrime MC8704 and MC8705 offer HSPA+ single channel support, with peak network downlink speed of 21 Mbps. The AirPrime MC8704 offers voice calling capability, while the MC8705 is targeted for data-centric devices that do not require voice support.

Samples of the AirPrime MC8801 and MC8705 are now available to customers for testing, with commercial shipments expected in the fourth quarter of this year. Samples of the AirPrime MC8704 are expected to be available early in 2011. With a substantial track record of working with network operators and manufacturing customers to integrate new wireless technologies quickly and reliably, Sierra Wireless offers the experience and expertise to simplify wireless integration and optimize time-to-market.

Intuit GoPayment and mophie marketplace Offer Complete Credit Card Solution for iPhone

Mobile App, Hardware Package Provides Everything Small Businesses Need for On-the-go Payments; Available at Apple Retail Stores

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - Small businesses can now get everything they need in one package to quickly start processing credit cards on their iPhone.

Intuit Inc. (Nasdaq: INTU) and mophie [cq] today announced the availability of the Complete Credit Card Solution, an all-in-one product that enables small businesses to easily process credit card payments via the Apple iPhone. It integrates Intuit's GoPayment credit card processing app and quick-to-activate merchant account with the mophie marketplace credit card reader. This package is now available in Apple Retail Stores and soon on Apple.com

As part of this solution, Intuit GoPayment offers a quick and easy application process that is designed to let merchants start processing credit cards on their iPhones in as few as 15 minutes. As an option, GoPayment is also compatible with QuickBooks® Mac to help save time in keeping business financial files up to date.

"We designed this to meet the needs of small businesses who want a complete credit card solution that works with their iPhone," said Chris Hylen, general manager of Intuit's Payment Solutions division. "Now we have a best-in-class solution from Intuit and mophie to meet that need. This means that a business owner only needs to buy one package to get set up with everything they need to start taking mobile payments even before they leave the store."

Doing more with mobile devices is key for small businesses on the go. "mophie designs products that enable consumers to do more with their Apple devices and that deliver additional convenience and freedom for all types of mobile activity," said Shawn Dougherty, COO of mophie. "This integrated hardware and software mobile payment solution enables immediate and secure financial transactions on the go for a vast audience of small business owners and their employees."
Enhanced GoPayment Features for the iPhone

GoPayment has been on the market for more than a year and has already processed $35 million in transactions for small businesses. In addition to faster merchant account activation and integration with QuickBooks Mac, this latest version offers easier navigation with the ability for customers to sign their bill via the iPhone touch screen.

It's also possible to now add inventory items to receipts, which can instantly be e-mailed or sent by text to a customer for their records. To make GoPayment affordable for the smallest of small businesses, it also offers new simplified pricing with competitive discount rates and transaction fees.
How it Works

The speedy new Intuit Merchant Account application process is designed to let small business owners easily and quickly apply and be approved to start processing credit cards. A user can apply from the GoPayment App, online or by calling Intuit right from their iPhone.

By adding the sleek, clip-on mophie marketplace card reader, merchants can save time by securely swiping credit cards instead of entering numbers by hand. After swiping the card, data is immediately encrypted using Intuit's industry-standard security methods.

Customers authorize the payment by signing their name on the iPhone touch screen. The merchant can then send them an e-mail or text receipt. GoPayment processes the credit card within seconds and funds are deposited into the businesses' bank account.

An additional option lets businesses integrate GoPayment with QuickBooks Mac to easily and quickly match the right customer and invoice in QuickBooks.

Vodafone Introduces Portable Mobile Wi-Fi and Mobile Broadband Device

Vodafone today announced the launch of its new Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) certified Mobile Wi-Fi device, the R201. The first of its kind, the R201 enables five Wi-Fi enabled devices to simultaneously share digital content which a customer has stored on the device, and access the internet via a Vodafone Mobile Broadband connection.

The R201 comes with embedded DLNA software, allowing Vodafone customers to view their digital content, such as music, video and photos, across all DLNA compatible devices, including laptops, netbooks, mobile phones, gaming devices, TVs and radios.

DLNA is a standard used to enable the sharing of digital media between different consumer electronic devices. For example, a DLNA compliant TV can interoperate with a DLNA compliant PC to play music, photos or videos. The specification also includes Digital Rights Management (DRM), to ensure that content is protected from unauthorised copying and use.

The device is particularly attractive to Small and Home Office workers as it can be used to map network drives and share files boosting their collaborative capabilities on the move. Thanks to embedded Samba Software, the device can effectively be used as a mini Linux server once an SD memory card is inserted. The device supports SD memory cards of up to 32GB which can be purchased separately.

The DLNA certified Vodafone Mobile WiFi hotspot acts as a central hub for storing digital content, from pictures, video, music and document files and sharing and displaying them on any other WiFi enabled, DLNA certified device in the home or in the office.

The device will be available in various countries where Vodafone operates during 2010. The device comes with a robust, contemporary industrial design, featuring an onboard display which allows the user to monitor connectivity information, as well as battery strength, signal strength and the number of active connected devices.

'The Vodafone R201 Mobile WiFi device enables our customers to take the WiFi connectivity experience they have at home or in the office everywhere with them, thanks to Vodafone Mobile Broadband,' said Huw Medcraft, Vodafone's Director of Mobile Broadband. 'By adding DLNA compatibility to the device, it becomes much more than a connection to the internet, by enabling users to connect to their other WiFi enabled DLNA devices and wirelessly share and enjoy their digital content, no matter where they are. We know that consumers in particular now have an array of Wi-Fi enabled devices that they use both at home and on the move - the R201 allows them to use them all in a highly convenient way.'

Vodafone has integrated the award winning Twonky Application, developed by PacketVideo. Twonky's advanced connectivity includes but is not limited to DLNA standards, UpNP and proprietary protocols. It provides a seamless experience for digital media sharing on compatible home and mobile devices. Qualcomm Announces the Mobile Computing Platform 110

Next Evolution in MCP100 Series Optimizes Transportation Company Operations with PDF Viewing and On-Board Driver Tutorials

SAN DIEGO - Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading provider of integrated wireless systems and services to transportation, logistics and service fleet companies, today announced the Mobile Computing Platform 110 (MCP110), the next generation on-board fleet management system in the MCP100 series. MCP110 is specifically engineered to optimize transportation company operations and will be commercially available in fall 2010.

The MCP110 supports all current MCP100 series applications and offers new capabilities, including a PDF viewer that allows drivers to view and, with an optional in-cab printer, print PDF documents right from their cab, making it easy for fleet managers to send special instructions to drivers who are arriving at customer sites. The on-board driver tutorials, which are similar to the 'help' function in many software programs, are available to educate drivers on how to use various MCP110 applications. Additionally, the MCP110's Driver Interface Unit (DIU110) boasts a higher resolution display with more vibrant colors, improving driver satisfaction with an enhanced user experience.

MCP110 operates using terrestrial communication with the option to upgrade to terrestrial plus Wi-Fi communication. With Wi-Fi-enabled communication, customers can access static content on both the Internet and web-based email programs, as well as scan documents over the Wi-Fi network without paying a per page charge. In addition, customers can utilize Qualcomm's Content Delivery Service, which allows audio messages to be broadcast to the fleet without an additional charge.

'The MCP110 platform delivers new features that add value to transportation company operations,' said Norm Ellis, vice president of sales, services and marketing for Qualcomm Enterprise Services. 'The addition of this platform to Qualcomm's product portfolio further expands our ability to deliver industry-leading applications and services to a wide spectrum of fleets.'

The MCP100 and MCP200 Series product lines comprise Qualcomm's portfolio of mobile information systems, which is designed to meet the diverse needs of fleets with a variety of operational profiles. The Mobile Computing Platform 100 Series, which includes the MCP100 and MCP110, is designed to improve operational efficiency, enhance driver productivity and reduce costs. The MCP200 delivers an expanded set of award-winning Qualcomm Transportation Services to help enable fleets to transform the cab into a mobile operations center and drive additional revenue.
